The NHVR processes permit renewals for all permit types issued by the NHVR. For all other permit renewals (including any travel within the Northern Territory and Western Australia), you will need to apply directly to the relevant state or territory road transport authority.

  • If your original permit was issued by a state or territory road transport authority and it is for a permit type now issued by the NHVR, you are eligible to renew your current permit through the NHVR.
  • Renewal applications can be submitted for current permits and should be submitted no earlier than 6 weeks and no later than 16 days before the permit expires.
  • Renewal applications submitted earlier than 6 weeks before permit expiry may not be processed.

To assist you in managing expiring permits, the Portal will now email a reminder notification 6 weeks prior to the expiry date and then a final reminder 24 hours beforehand. If the permit has expired and travel is still required, a new application must be submitted.

Renew an existing permit in Application Tracker

Navigate to Application Tracker.


  1. Select RENEW.




  2. Add a Reference name or title for the new renewal permit.


  3. From your existing permit, add the Issuer, Expiry Date and Permit ID number. 


  4. If there is an existing NHVR Permit, the system will automatically find and match the Permit details from the Permit ID number and update the renewal permit with existing information. 

    1. Then simply, make the changes to the Permit Period under Travel Details and complete any freight details. (Skip to Step 6)

  5. If there is NOT an existing NHVR Permit, you will be prompted to complete the vehicle details.

    1. Use the SELECT CONFIGURATION button to find your vehicle type.


    2. Complete the required vehicle details for the vehicle type (these are different depending on the selected type). If there is any missing vehicle information, the incomplete sections will appear in red. Remember, the vehicle component tabs will also need completing, followed by ticking the 'I confirm selection of the correct component' checkbox for each vehicle component.
       

    3. Make the changes to the Permit Period under Travel Details and complete any freight details.


    4. The Route information will be completed by NHVR after the renewal permit is submitted.

  6. Upload any supporting documents under Attachments. If renewing a permit issued by a State or Territory Jurisdiction, you will be prompted to upload the permit in this section. 

  7. Review your Contact information and check the Renew Permit Application details under Confirmation. If the details are correct, scroll to the bottom of the page and complete the required declarations and SUBMIT. Any changes you have made on the Permit will be applied to all of the subsequent Cases sharing the Permit Number.



  8. You will then be prompted to add your payment details using a secure Credit Card payment gateway. Once PAY is selected and accepted, you renewal application will be sent to NHVR for processing.

    If there are significant changes to the permit details, this will be seen as an Amendment or New permit application and fees may apply. See: Can I amend a permit without a fee applying?

    Renewing your permit via the Permit Library

  9. If your permit was issued by NHVR after 25th September 2017, you can renew your permit via the Permit Library. You will need to find and select the permit for renewal.
