PBS - Do I need a Performance-Based Standards Permit?

Answer:

A Performance-Based Standards (PBS) permit is required for ALL travel on the PBS network or on a route that is outside of the network for that level of vehicle.

The NHVR processes ALL PBS permit applications except for travel within the Northern Territory and Western Australia. For these jurisdictions, apply directly to the relevant state or territory road transport authority.

Operators must hold a PBS Vehicle Approval before the NHVR can commence the process for seeking access for the PBS vehicle. For operators that have a PBS Design Approval, you can submit a PBS permit application to obtain a PBS Final Approval and an access permit at the same time. Please Note: Prior to the introduction of the Heavy Vehicle National Law the PBS Vehicle Approval was known as a PBS Final Approval. The PBS Final Approval is a valid PBS Vehicle Approval under the new laws. For more information please view the Performance-Based Standards webpage.
